Student Announcements

05/20/2013 - 07:35

Good Morning Whiteaker!

Congratulations to Talsin Foster, who is our Turn Around Award winner this year!  Talsin and his family were honored at the Keizer Civic Center last week.  After an elegant lunch, he was presented with a plaque.  Please check out the newspaper article all about it that is now posted on the student bulletin board.

Tuesday –  Area-wide Orchestra Concert @ McNary (7:00 PM)

Thank you to the Leadership class for providing a fun Spirit Week and a dance!  It was a great way to wrap up the spring sports season!

Students, our expectation is that you show respectful behavior in ALL areas in the building, and that you address staff respectfully as well.  Please remember this when you are in the library as well, especially when your teacher has sent you down to check out a book or to work independently in the library.

Mr. McCarthy and I have noticed that the dress code has begun to decline.  We want you to be dressing for success, right up to the very end!  Teachers, please make extra effort this week to attend to dress code, and send violators to the office to borrow some lovely outfits to change into.  Ladies, remember, fashion holes in jeans, skirts and shorts must be mid-thigh!  And no tank-tops.  Remember, if you don’t want us to bug you, don’t violate the dress code to start with!  If you are wondering if something is too short or not, assume it is and choose another outfit!

I don’t like to end announcements on a sad note, but I just wanted to remind you that this next weekend is a holiday, as Monday, May 27 is Memorial Day, so no school on that day.

That’s it for this week’s announcements.  Let’s get this week rolling!

Make it a GREAT week!

05/13/2013 - 15:46

Good Morning Whiteaker!

Monday – 6th & 7th grade students, you will be given your registration materials in your Language Arts classes today.  You need to carefully select the elective choices you are requesting for next year, because once you are scheduled you will not be able to make any changes.  Likewise, every year I hear someone say they just picked random things for their alternate choices because they only wanted certain classes.  The reality is that we often need to look at your alternate choices because what you first chose is not available or it is too full it won’t fit into your schedule.  So, be sure about what you pick, because it is going to affect what you get for the entire school year next year!

Monday evening is our Annual Electives Extravaganza!  Make sure you tell all your friends and family to come see the cool work you do in your electives classes!  Show off your talent!  And if your work is not being shown in this event, still come so that you can see all the wonderful possibilities open to you as you are trying to decide which electives to fill out on your registration sheet!

Tuesday – Good luck to our tracksters at All City!  We’ve had a great season, and you all have done an outstanding job!  I hope the meet goes very well, and you all hit your PRs!

Wednesday –

Thursday –

Friday – Spirit/Sports Recognition afternoon Assembly.  Then, at 6:00 PM we are holding a school dance.  The dance is over at 8:00, so please remember to have your parents pick you up directly after the dance!

Saturday – Band and Choir students will be marching or float-riding in the Keizer Iris Festival Parade.  Get out there and enjoy the festivities, and make sure you cheer really, really, really loud when they go by!

Be sure to stop in the library for the Spring Book Fair this next week!

Ok, I know that it is staying light later and later….so maybe you are getting up later and later?  Mrs. Peterson just said she’s noticed an increase in tardies first period.  We want you to continue to finish the school year on a STRONG note, so please be sure to get out of bed when that annoying alarm clock rings!  We want you here on time!

That’s it for this week’s announcements.  Let’s get this week rolling!

Make it a GREAT week!

04/29/2013 - 07:48

Wednesday – Track team pictures

Thursday – Speaking of great music students, good luck to all our traveling musicians, who will be traveling to either California or to Canada this next week, to participate in more festivals!  Students, remember to get your make-up work done and turned in BEFORE you leave!  And remember to continue to represent Whiteaker with pride!  How you act when you are in the community reflects directly on our whole school!

Friday – No school for students: Grading day for teachers!

As we continue into spring and summer, please be mindful of the school dress code.  Need I say more?

For any 8th graders who have not yet turned in your forecasting sheet for your high school classes, Mr. Lieuellen will be here on Tuesday to pick them up.  PLEASE make sure you get first dibs of choosing classes by getting these turned in!  If you don’t get those sheets turned in, administrators at McNary will choose electives for you based on what is left over after everyone else has been scheduled!

That’s it for this week’s announcements.  Let’s get this week rolling!

Make it a GREAT week!

You can also speak with any of your teachers.  Right now we have 52 students that our staff has recommended!  We are looking for students that have a 2.5-3.5 GPA, Great attendance, willingness to push themselves, positive attitudes and want to learn skills needed to get into college.

Want to get a head start on high school?  The McNary Summer Transition Program is giving students one last opportunity to turn in applications.  If you would like to hear more about the program, sign up in Guidance Center, and we’ll call you down to talk with Mr. Murray when he comes back to give his final presentation.

Last, but certainly not least, a huge community “thank you” to all of you for contributing food during our food drive!  As a school community, we brought in almost 1500 lbs of food to share!  Zowie!!!!  Thank you, too, to Mrs. Cramer and Mr. Decker for heading up the competition.  Without their support and organization, we would not have been so successful.

That’s it for this week’s announcements.  Let’s get this week rolling!

Make it a GREAT week!

Wednesday – 8th Grade Curriculum Night at McNary 6:00-8:00 – This is an important evening for 8th graders, as you begin preparing for your transition to McNary!  Please take the time to go to this event with your parents, even if just for a short time.  You’ll be GLAD you did!

Thursday –  Good luck to our tracksters!  I can’t wait to watch you run, jump, and throw, and to challenge yourself to reach your own personal best!

Friday – Food Drive Ends!  I’ve been SO impressed with how you’ve risen to the occasion and brought in SOOOOOO much food!  Know that YOU are MAKING A DIFFERENCE in our community by your generosity!  Kudos to you!

Speaking of Kudos, I just want to congratulate our 7th and 8th grade math students!  The OAKS scores are way up this year, and it’s clear that you are taking your test seriously!  Right now our 6th graders are taking their math OAKS, and then we are moving into 8th grade Science tests.  Remember, do your BEST on these tests!  It does impact your future in school!

And our last Kudo is for the Jazz Band.  I received two really positive emails from staff at Gubser sharing how much they and the kids enjoyed your performance!  I always appreciate hearing when students represent Whiteaker well, and YOU DID!  Thank you!  I’m VERY proud of you!!!!

Good luck to our jazz musicians and singers at Pleasant Hill on Saturday!  I can’t wait to hear how you do!

That’s it for this week’s announcements.  Let’s get this week rolling!

Tuesday – Enrichment Academy begins!

Thursday – Lifetouch Spring Pictures

Saturday – Keizer Jazz Night, 7 p.m., McNary HS Cafeteria

Students, you know how I’ve been talking about Dr. Taylor’s math concepts classes?  Well, Channel 12 heard what we said about him at the school board meeting, and they might be interested in doing a story on him!  If you (or your parents) are interested in attending more sessions, he will come back and teach on Wednesday nights.  Please let me know if you are interested.  You can either write me a note and leave it in the office, or you can tell me when you see me in the hall.  Classes run from 6:30-8:00 on Wednesday nights.

There is a new high school graduation requirement that you need to be aware of.  All students will be responsible for completing their Personal Education Plan (PEP) through CIS.  CIS (Career Information System) is full of valuable resources!  Students can take skill assessments, research occupations, discover what colleges offer the right training, and find scholarship money.  Again, having a completed PEP is a graduation requirement. If you would like to learn more about CIS and what it has to offer, please join McNary staff in the McNary High School Library for a CIS Parent Night, April 11th, at 6:30pm—8:00pm.

Cramer and Decker vs the world (well Whiteaker that is). Mrs. Cramer's and Mr. Decker's classes are inviting the whole school to take part in food drive for Marion County Polk Food Share. Each day we are asking the students to bring food items to their first period teachers to be picked up by leadership students at the end of the day. We will start the drive Monday April 8th and it will last till April 19th.  Each day we will announce who is in the lead and the winning group gets bragging rights but more importantly will have made a huge difference in the lives of people right here in Salem. So get out there and make a difference in your community Whiteaker!!!

We pretty much have 8th grade OAKS math testing completed, and now are moving  on to 7th grade, and then to 6th grade at the end of the week.  Good luck, you brilliant math students!  Remember to do your best, as you may only get one opportunity to test, and I know you want to meet your own personal growth target!  Testing schedules are posted in the main hallway by the office.

That’s it for this week’s announcements.  Let’s get this week rolling!

Make it a GREAT week!

04/02/2013 - 15:54

Good Morning Whiteaker!  Welcome back from Spring break!  It’s hard to believe, but there are only 11 more weeks of school!  That means we need to get into HIGH GEAR to wrap up this school year with a strong finish!  Be sure to keep up on your homework and your assignments.  We want your grades to reflect who YOU are and what you are capable of!  Also, we begin our OAKS testing this month.  Again, it’s important that you get a good night’s sleep before testing, and that you eat a good breakfast on the days that you test.  Remember that how you do may impact which electives you may take next year, especially if you are in the 8th grade right now!

Tuesday – Track practice begins!

I want to give you kudos for maintaining excellent attendance here at Whiteaker!  Our school is among those with the highest attendance rates.  Although we dropped a little from last time, we currently have a 95% attendance rate!  Awesome!  Not only is this an important job skill, it’s also the only way we can teach you!  You have to be here in order to learn!  You have to be at work in order to earn the paycheck!  Keep practicing this important skill!

Preview reminder:  Lifetouch will be here on the 11th to take spring pictures, so start practicing your pose!

That’s it for this week’s announcements.  Let’s get this week rolling!

Make it a GREAT week!

03/19/2013 - 11:30

Good Morning Whiteaker!

Welcome to the last third of the school year!  I hope you enjoyed your 3 day weekend, and that you are making the best of the three days of this week so that you head out to spring break with a great feeling of accomplishment and renewal!

Just a reminder that Parent Conferences are this week!  They will be held Wednesday evening, and intermittently during the day and the evening on Thursday.  The school will be closed on Friday, so be sure you have everything you need out of your locker by then.  Also, please remember that we also get the Monday after spring break off.  The date for that is April 1 (though it’s no joke!) and you’ll be returning on April 2.

Thinking of this long break and the reminder about lockers, let’s take a moment this week to be SURE that you take all extra clothing home (and wash it!) and that you also make sure that no food is left inside your locker!  Please be sure to check the lost and found, as all items will be donated after this week.

In order to get ready for conferences, there will be no after school study halls or Wolverine Den this Wednesday after school.

Enjoy your spring break!!  See you again on Tuesday, April 2!

That’s it for this week’s announcements.  Let’s get this week rolling!
